| Summary: | Video games have been contemporary to most technological advances in the field of digital images. Even more than other media, they have long embraced scientific techniques in the representation of bodies and spaces. The video game Spacewar! (1962), developed by a team of engineers from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and often considered as one of the first in history, gives us an example of this process. Developed in the context of experimental research and driven by the technological race against USSR, Spacewar! plays a key role in defining a visual regime where images function as a manifestation of the power of algorithms. A semiotic analysis of the game will lead us to the hypothesis that scientific visual strategies have an influence on how video games are designed. |
