Summary:Online learning can be carried out in two ways, synchronously and asynchronously. The purpose of this study was to figure out coastal students’ perception of synchronous and asynchronous online learning. The method used was descriptive quantitative. The setting of this research was in one of the Universities in Tanjungpinang, Riau Archipelago. The respondents of this research were 36 third-semester English department students. The instrument of this research was a Likert scaled questionnaire. A Rasch model software called WINSTEPS version 3.73 was used to analyze the data. The results revealed that coastal students are more pleased and focused during online learning by the asynchronous method rather than synchronous. Interestingly, both synchronous and asynchronous don’t give significant effect on students’ understanding during online learning.
