Given that many lecturers and students in Vietnam are still unfamiliar with this approach, there is a need for localized insights into its implementation. This study investigates how cooperative learning influences student engagement, emphasizing the roles of instructional design and group structure at a public university in Vietnam. The study used (a) a literature review to establish the components of cooperative learning and student engagement and (b) a questionnaire to collect data from 176 students on the impact of cooperative learning on student engagement. The findings show that instructional design, through clear task allocation, creative group work, and timely guidance, significantly enhances student engagement across personal skills, emotions, and collaboration. Additionally, diversity management helps ensure that varied perspectives and expertise strengthen group interaction, creating an inclusive and supportive environment. The study underscores the value of well-structured cooperative learning models in boosting engagement and improving academic outcomes. The study acknowledges several limitations and proposes recommendations, such as examining group composition, social skills, and digital tools. The findings provide useful insights for educators seeking to boost student engagement through effective cooperative learning design. |
