description Dental anxiety is a prevalent psychosocial issue that significantly affects the quality of life for many individuals, influencing their willingness to seek dental care and ultimately affecting their oral health. The present narrative review aims to highlight some forms in which anxiety can manifest, including fear of pain, negative past experiences, and social factors, which collectively contribute to a cycle of avoidance and deteriorating oral health conditions. Moreover, the paper highlights the biological and psychological aspects of anxiety in dental treatment, describing also the main elements regarding the etiology of dental anxiety. The implications of dental anxiety extend beyond individual experiences; they can affect broader societal health outcomes. Effective management strategies, including non-pharmacological approaches such as cognitive-behavioral therapy and relaxation techniques, have been shown to alleviate anxiety and improve patient outcomes. Overall, dental anxiety is a significant psychosocial factor that adversely affects individuals’ quality of life by deterring them from seeking necessary dental care. Understanding the multifactorial nature of this anxiety, including its origins and consequences, is essential for developing effective management strategies that can improve oral health and overall well-being.
