Summary: | Aithnítear go bhfuil ceithre bhunmhúnla sa phleanáil teanga. Is iad siúd pleanáil an chorpais, pleanáil an stádais, pleanáil an tsealbhaithe agus pleanáil an ghradaim. Is é aidhm an ailt seo ná na múnlaí seo a phlé mar ar úsáideadh iad chun Gaeilge Uladh a chur chun tosaigh san iris An tUltach sna 1920idí. Is cosúil go raibh sé mar aidhm thosaigh ag An tUltach díriú ar phleanáil an chorpais nó tá sé luaite go ndéanfar iarracht Gaeilge “a chur síos i leabhraibh” sa chéad eagrán den iris agus gairm ar scríbhneoirí ann. Feictear fosta, ámh, go raibh pleanáil an tsealbhaithe go mór ar inchinn ag lucht na hirise agus “Leathanach na Múinteoirí” ann go minic sna blianta tosaigh. San alt seo, úsáidtear anailís théacsúil chun meon eagarthóra agus scríbhneoirí na hirise a fhiosrú trí iniúchadh a dhéanamh ar an méid a scríobh siad. Feicfear, cé nárbh ann do theoiricí thuasluaite na pleanála teanga ag an am, go luíonn an méid a tháinig amach san iris go néata leis na múnlaí céanna.
It is recognised that there are four elements to language planning. These are corpus planning, status planning, acquisition planning, and prestige planning. The aim of this article is to discuss how these elements were used to promote Ulster Irish in the journal known as An tUltach in the 1920s. It would appear that An tUltach was founded with the purpose of focusing on corpus planning as the first edition sought contributors through an open call for writers and states that a concerted attempt will be made to put Irish into books (“a chur síos i leabhraibh”). We also see, however, an eye towards acquisition planning with a teachers’ page (“Leathanach na Múinteoirí”) appearing frequently in the journal’s early years. In this article, textual analysis is used to delve into the mind of the editor and writers through an investigation of their written output. The views that they promoted regarding the language and its management at governmental level are discussed. The four elements of language planning are examined individually with a discussion on how the journal used each in order to promote Ulster Irish. It is seen that, although the above-mentioned theories of language planning had not yet been forwarded, much of what was published in the journal fits into this framework.
