| Summary: | Vicente Llorens’ works on the relation between exile and literature laid the foundations for a whole new field of study, especially regarding 19th century exiles. At the heart of this scholarship was a powerful retrospective analogy between the Republican exile in 1939 and other past exiles. With historical hindsight, and linking his vision of exile to other 20th century interpretations of «the problem of Spain», Llorens formulated the theory that Spanish culture is determined by repeated discontinuities and exclusions. We challenge this essentially ahistorical theory, aiming to show its wider implications and biases, and proposing a necessary questioning of memory and experience-based historical studies. |
