Summary:Through the study of images associated with manual and industrial training reform implemented in Menomonie, Wisconsin, at the turn of the 19th- and 20th-centuries, this article brings to light the split that existed at the time between manual and industrial classes and the world of work. Far from being geared toward preparation for the workplace, manual and industrial classes were in fact heavily dependent on American school reformers’ views about work, morals, and gender.
