description | The positions and political choices of the Society for Peace Movement (MSP), since the suspension of the electoral process in 1992, are conditioned both by the place that the Algerian State allocates to Islamist parties in general, and by its relations with other Islamist formations, which oscillate between strategies of distinction and of alliances. The principle of musharaka (participation) justifies from the outset the participation of the MSP in the institutions in place, but its inclusion in the political game encourages it to adopt a moderate approach, which go as far as -from the middle of the 1990’s-advocating the concept of wasatiya (centrism). After fifteen years in a government coalition with parties supporting the presidency, the MSP joined the parliamentary opposition in 2011. This repositioning, far from being a sign of radicalisation of the movement, can on the contrary be perceived as a reinforcement of a moderate approach of the party which continues to follow the rules of the institutional game while demanding a democratisation of the system in place. |
