We demonstrate that an Ar/N2 plasma pretreatment, applied prior to Au deposition, substantially strips oxides, renders the Cu surface amorphous and highly hydrophilic, and thus suppresses grain-boundary-selective Au displacement to form a smooth, continuous passivation layer. …”
