Simulating the Role of Biogeochemical Hotspots in Driving Nitrogen Export From Dryland Watersheds by Jianning Ren, Erin J. Hanan, Aral Greene, Christina Tague, Alexander H. Krichels, William D. Burke, Joshua P. Schimel, Peter M. Homyak

    Published 2024-03-01
“…Modeled N export was sensitive to three major factors (a) the abundance of hotspots in a watershed: N export increased linearly and then reached an asymptote with increasing hotspot abundance; this occurred because carbon and N inputs eventually became limiting as hotspots displaced vegetation cover, (b) the soil moisture threshold required for subsurface flow from hotspots to reestablish: peak streamflow N export increased and then decreased with an increasing threshold due to tradeoffs between N accumulation and export that occur with increasingly disconnected hotspots, and (c) the rate at which water diffused out of hotspots as soils dried down: N export was generally higher when the rate was slow because more N could accumulate in hotspots over dry periods, and then be flushed more rapidly to streams at the onset of rain. …”

Measuring the Effectiveness of Carbon-Aware AI Training Strategies in Cloud Instances: A Confirmation Study by Roberto Vergallo, Luca Mainetti

    Published 2024-09-01
“…Such strategies—natively Cloud-based—use the time resource to postpone or pause the training algorithm when the carbon intensity reaches a threshold. While such strategies have proved to achieve interesting results on a benchmark of modern models covering Natural Language Processing (NLP) and computer vision applications and a wide range of model sizes (up to 6.1B parameters), it is still unclear whether such results may hold also with different algorithms and in different geographical regions. …”

Evolution of joint power across the lifespan during walking by Bernard X. W. Liew, Rachel Senden, David Rugamer, Kenneth Meijer, Qichang Mei, Kim Duffy, Kevin Netto, Matthew Taylor

    Published 2025-06-01
“…Conclusion Ankle push-off power appears to reach maturity in the 3rd decade of life. A strict temporal correspondence between a decline in ankle push-off power (A2) with age and a compensatory increase in hip pull-off power (H3) was not observed, challenging the distal-to-proximal alteration in propulsion strategy commonly attributed to the ageing process.…”
