Application of schmidt hammer and ultrasonic pulse velocity for structural integrity assessment in water dams by Wilson M. Kairu, Siphila W. Mumenya, Kenneth D. Njoroge, Ian M. Kaniu

    Published 2025-03-01
“…The findings demonstrate that while Schmidt Hammer provides reliable surface strength estimations, UPV offers deeper insight into material heterogeneity and internal variability. Integrating both methods with core-derived calibration enhances the accuracy of field strength estimations, bridging the gap between laboratory-controlled conditions and real-world applications. …”

Integrated irrigation of water and fertilizer with superior self-correcting fuzzy PID control system. by Wanjun Zhang, Jingsheng Tong, Feng Zhang, Wanliang Zhang, Jingxuan Zhang, Jingyi Zhang, Jingyan Zhang, Honghong Sun, Derek O Northwood, Kristian E Waters, Hao Ma

    Published 2025-01-01
“…., excessive overshoot, prolonged settling time, poor adaptability to nonlinearities) and the insufficient real-time adjustment capability of conventional fuzzy PID control, which relies on empirically predefined rule bases, this study proposes a self-correcting fuzzy PID control strategy for agricultural water-fertilizer integrated systems. Traditional PID control, due to its static parameters, suffers from reduced stability and error accumulation under dynamic variations (e.g., irrigation flow fluctuations, environmental disturbances) or nonlinear interactions (e.g., coupling effects of fertilizer concentration and pH). …”

Complex Effects of Tides on Coastal Groundwater Revealed by High‐Resolution Integrated Flow Modeling by Xiaoli Wang, Yong Tian, Jiang Yu, Michele Lancia, Ji Chen, Kai Xiao, Yi Zheng, Charles B. Andrews, Chunmiao Zheng

    Published 2023-10-01
“…Based on the 10‐year simulation results (2004–2013), the major findings of this study are as follows: (a) accurate representation of the tidal effect is important not only for simulating short‐term flow dynamics but also for capturing the characteristics of long‐term hydrological fluxes and states; (b) the flow‐model‐computed average groundwater discharge rate per unit length of the coastline for the PRD is 3.01 m3/d/m, which is comparable with those derived from water budget approaches but 1–2 orders of magnitude lower than the total submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) estimated by using isotope tracer‐based methods; (c) the temporal variation of SGD is controlled by tidal forcing on an hourly time scale, but by terrestrial hydrological processes on monthly and annual time scales; and (d) an integrated hydrological flow model can be used to identify distinct and large subsurface zones sensitive to tidal fluctuations, quantifying the pivotal role of ocean tides in shaping the coastal groundwater system. …”

Source-Free Domain Adaptation Framework for Rotary Machine Fault Diagnosis by Hoejun Jeong, Seungha Kim, Donghyun Seo, Jangwoo Kwon

    Published 2025-07-01
“…To address this, we propose a robust fault diagnosis framework incorporating three key components: (1) an order-frequency-based preprocessing method to normalize rotational variations, (2) a U-Net variational autoencoder (U-NetVAE) to enhance adaptation through reconstruction learning, and (3) a test-time training (TTT) strategy enabling unsupervised target domain adaptation without access to source data. …”
