Review of gut-kidney crosstalk in acute kidney injury
Published 2021-01-01“…With the characteristics of high incidence, high mortality, high health-economic cost and social burden, acute kidney injury(AKI)has become a worldwide public health problem.Currently there is no established pharmacotherapy for AKI.Emerging studies have proposed that gut-kidney axis crosstalk may play an important role in the occurrence and development of AKI and its distal non-renal organ injury/dysfunction.And it is expected to become a new promising target for intervention. This review summarized the bidirectional role of intestinal-renal axis in AKI,including secondary intestinal barrier injury, gut-derived immune response, inflammation disorders, intestinal-related host immunomodulation and homeostasis of gut microbiome. The possible mechanisms were explore for intervening AKI based upon intestinal-renal axis from the perspective of achieving multi-system balance by adjusting intestinal homeostasis. The latest research advances were discussed for providing new ideas and methods for improving the prognosis of AKI.…”
