Universal Nonthermal Power-law Distribution Functions from the Self-consistent Evolution of Collisionless Electrostatic Plasmas
Published 2024-01-01“…Collisionless systems often exhibit nonthermal power-law tails in their distribution functions. Interestingly, collisionless plasmas in various physical scenarios (e.g., the ion population of the solar wind) feature a v ^−5 tail in their velocity ( v ) distribution, whose origin has been a long-standing puzzle. …”

A changing of the garden: evaluating the performance and ecosystem functionality of alternative oyster garden structures in residential waterways
Published 2025-05-01“…Oyster gardening, in which hanging oyster recruitment substrates are suspended from docks, has become an increasingly common and accessible technique for coastal communities to support local oyster populations for biodiversity enhancement, habitat restoration, and ecological functions including water filtration. However, little research has been done to evaluate materials and methods for oyster garden structures regarding cost, ease of assembly, durability, and ecosystem benefits, making it difficult to scale up efforts and maximize project success and sustainability. …”

Machine learning model for differentiating malignant from benign thyroid nodules based on the thyroid function data
Published 2025-05-01“…Objectives To develop and validate a machine learning (ML) model to differentiate malignant from benign thyroid nodules (TNs) based on the routine data and provide diagnostic assistance for medical professionals.Setting A qualified panel of 1649 patients with TNs from one hospital were stratified by gender, age, free triiodothyronine (FT3), free thyroxine (FT4) and thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAB).Participants Thyroid function (TF) data of 1649 patients with TNs were collected in a single centre from January 2018 to June 2022, with a total of 273 males and 1376 females, respectively.Measures Seven popular ML models (Random Forest, Decision Tree, Logistic Regression (LR), K-Neighbours, Gaussian Naive Bayes, Multilayer Perception and Gradient Boosting) were developed to predict malignant and benign TNs, whose performance indicators included area under the curve (AUC), accuracy, recall, precision and F1 score. Results A total of 1649 patients were enrolled in this study, with the median age of 45.15±13.41 years, and the male to female ratio was 1:5.055. …”

The mediating effect of frailty between social isolation and cognitive function in elderly patients with type 2 diabetes
Published 2025-07-01“…[Results] 300 elderly patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus scored 14 (9, 20) points for social isolation and 103 (34.33%) for social isolation; 5 (3, 7) points for frailty and 169 (56.33%) for frailty; 25 (23, 27) points for cognitive function and 98 (32.67%) for cognitive impairment. The frailty score was negatively correlated with the social isolation score (r=-0.327, P<0.001), the frailty score was negatively correlated with the cognitive function score (r=-0.394, P<0.001), and the social isolation was positively correlated with the cognitive function score (r=0.370,P<0.001).Bootstrap test showed that the indirect effect value was 0.071 (95%CI: 0.038-0.116), indicating that the indirect effect was established; the direct effect was 0.148 (95%CI: 0.088-0.208), indicating that weakness played a partial mediating role between social isolation and cognitive function, and the indirect effect (0.071) accounted for 32.42% of the total effect (0.219). …”
