Review of the hydrological effects of the extreme event Hurricane Eta in the Chiriquí Viejo River basin, November 2020 by Hermes De Gracia

    Published 2025-06-01
“…The maximum rainfall recorded on November 4, 2020, reached 223.8 mm, while the flow in Paso Canoa reached 638.03 m³/s, demonstrating the magnitude of the event and the inability of the basin to handle such high volumes of water.Through a detailed analysis, it was observed that soil saturation resulted in direct runoff of up to 70.0 mm that same day, which shows that the infiltration capacity of the soil was quickly exceeded.Despite the damage observed, there are currently no advanced hydrological studies on extreme events in critical basins such as the Chiriquí Viejo River. This lack of research reflects a serious lack of planning and assessment of the risks associated with phenomena of this magnitude. One of the most critical problems found is the lack of specialized hydrology professionals, who are essential to carry out detailed studies and ensure sustainable management of water resources. In a context where climate change increases the frequency and intensity of extreme events, the absence of hydrologists in the region puts the resilience of the basin to future disasters at risk. The basin's hydraulic system demonstrated its inability to handle high flows, underscoring the need to improve flood control and water retention infrastructure. In addition, the lack of effective hydrological planning and coordination in the management of hydraulic infrastructures compromises both the safety of downstream communities and the sustainability of hydroelectric reservoirs, vital for the region.…”

Influence of Rail Line Gradient and Curve on Pantograph-Catenary Dynamic Performance by Huan ZOU, Ning ZHOU, Dong ZOU, Weihua ZHANG

    Published 2020-03-01
“…The results showed that, when the slope change rate is 0, the influence of line on the dynamic response of the pantograph/catenary isn’t obvious;the positive slope change rate of the contact wire decreases the mechanical wear of pantograph/catenary, the stability of current is reduced, and it increases the electrical wear, but the negative slope change rate of the contact wire makes opposite; the smaller the radius of the vertical and horizontal curve, the worse the stability of the pantograph/catenary dynamic performance, which can not be ignored in the simulation, and it should be considered in the line design, construction and interval speed limit of horizontal curve and vertical curve setting.…”

Antibiotic pretreatment inhibits white band disease infection by suppressing the bacterial pathobiome by Jason D. Selwyn, Jason D. Selwyn, Brecia A. Despard, Brecia A. Despard, Kai A. Galvan-Dubois, Kai A. Galvan-Dubois, Emily C. Trytten, Emily C. Trytten, Steven V. Vollmer, Steven V. Vollmer

    Published 2025-02-01
“…We found the prophylactic use of antibiotics led to significantly reduced infection rates in disease exposed corals with a 30-percentage point decrease in the infection rate. Analyses of 16S rRNA amplicon gene sequencing data in the disease exposed corals demonstrated that antibiotic pretreatment resulted in coral microbiomes which were less speciose and contained relatively fewer Vibrio spp. than untreated corals, indicating that the benefit of the antibiotic pretreatment was its ability to reduce the relative abundance of intrinsic secondary opportunists and/or opportunistic pathogens suggesting their likely importance to the etiology of WBD. …”

CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF LOADING BY TECHNOLOGY RECONDITIONING, WITH APPLICATION TO REPAIR PIECES OF AUTO INDUSTRY by Gheorghe AMZA

    Published 2015-05-01
“…One problem is that the presence of detonation ultra-dispersed diamonds in the grain metal coating of diamond powders not only improves the coating functional reliability in protection from destruction in the subsequent pressing and sintering in the production tool, but also resistance of such coating to the opening of the diamond cutting basis of the grains on the grinding wheel working surface that come into working contact with the material being processed. An analysis of the features of an effective exploitative destruction of detonation ultra-dispersed diamonds in the metal coating using electric current in the tool of the diamondspark grinding processes is presented.…”
