Published 2024-12-01“…À partir d’un corpus d’environ 200 best-sellers sortis entre 1980 et 2023, cet article propose d’établir un tableau synthétique de l’histoire de ce médiévalisme vidéoludique à succès et d’en interpréter les grandes tendances au regard de celles de la culture populaire, de l’évolution rapide des possibilités techniques, des acteurs et de la configuration changeante de l’industrie du jeu vidéo, de l’élargissement progressif du public consommateur et de la circulation d’influences au sein du champ vidéoludique comme avec d’autres médias. Trois grandes séquences sont ainsi identifiées : celle d’un premier essor commercial d’une heroic fantasy vidéoludique archétypale (c.1980-c.1994) ; celle d’une importante diversification du médiévalisme vidéoludique à succès, qui se traduit notamment par l’essor d’une fantasy plus sombre et nuancée ainsi que d’imaginaires du « vrai » Moyen Âge et de Moyen Âge non-européens (c.1995-c.2006) ; et celle enfin du grand triomphe commercial de ce médiévalisme dans le monde du jeu vidéo (depuis c.2007), qui malgré sa diversité promeut essentiellement un imaginaire du Moyen Âge occidental – fantastique et « réel » – et ses stéréotypes.…”
