Summary:This study examined the relationship between financial reporting and the performance of small-scale businesses in Buyanja Town Council. The study aimed to elucidate the benefits of financial reporting, examine the various types of reports utilized by these businesses, and identify the challenges they encounter in the reporting process in Buyanja town council Rukungiri district. The research methodology outlines the research design, target population, sample size and sampling techniques, data collection instruments, reliability of the instruments, methods of data analysis, and ethical considerations. The study was conducted using a case study research design whereby data was collected using questionnaire techniques from 152 respondents who were randomly sampled from an eligible population of 250 small-scale business owners in Buyanja town council, Rukungiri district. Key findings reveal that financial reporting significantly enhances business decision-making and financial transparency, leading to improved performance and credibility with stakeholders. However, small-scale businesses face substantial challenges, including limited resources, lack of financial expertise, and inadequate infrastructure for comprehensive reporting. The study identifies common report types such as income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements, and assesses their effectiveness in meeting the informational needs of stakeholders. Recommendations include enhancing financial literacy among business owners, increasing access to affordable financial reporting tools, and fostering supportive regulatory environments. This research contributes valuable insights into the role of financial reporting in small business success and offers practical solutions to overcome prevalent obstacles.
