description Biodiversity loss is a critical concern in Uganda, particularly in forested regions like MafugaForest, which play a vital role in supporting ecosystems and local livelihoods. This study assesses the extent and impact of biodiversity loss in Mafuga Forest, focusing on the contributing factors and implications for the surrounding communities. Utilizing qualitative research methods, including interviews, field observations, and analysis of secondary data, information was gathered from local residents, environmental experts, and forest management authorities. The findings reveal several drivers of biodiversity loss, including deforestation, agricultural encroachment, illegal logging, and climate change. These activities are leading to habitat degradation, loss of species, and disruptions in ecological balance, which negatively affect both the forest ecosystem and the socio-economic well-being of the community. The study highlights the need for community engagement and the implementation of sustainable forest management practices to mitigate biodiversity loss. It emphasizes the importance of conservation strategies that involve local communities, promote environmental education, and ensure equitable access to forest resources. Additionally, the research identifies opportunities for collaboration between government agencies, conservation organizations, and local communities to protect Mafuga Forest's biodiversity while promoting sustainable livelihoods. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of biodiversity dynamics in Mafuga Forest and provides insights for policymakers, environmental practitioners, and community leaders to develop inclusive strategies for biodiversity conservation in the Kigezi Region and beyond.
