description The study evaluated the effects of climate change on food security in Kashare Sub-County, Mbarara District. Its objectives included identifying the causes of climate change in the area, assessing its impact on crop yields and food security, and examining the adaptation strategies employed by farmers to mitigate its effects on food production and livelihoods. A cross-sectional study design was employed, with a sample of 105 respondents. Data collection methods included self-administered questionnaires, observations, and interview guides. The data were analyzed using Excel and other computer software to generate descriptive statistics, such as frequencies and percentages, which were presented in tables and text. Regarding the causes of climate change, most respondents cited deforestation as the leading cause, followed by unsustainable agricultural practices, burning of fossil fuels, and industrialization, which was ranked lowest. Concerning the impact of climate change on crop yields and food security, 42.9% of respondents reported reduced maize yields as the primary effect. A smaller proportion (9.5%) mentioned a decline in sweet potato production, while 33.3% and 14.3% of respondents pointed to decreased bean and cassava outputs, respectively. Regarding adaptation strategies to mitigate the effects of climate change, the most common approach was crop diversification, which was mentioned by 38.1% of respondents. Other strategies included soil conservation practices (33.3%), water harvesting techniques (19.1%), and agroforestry (9.5%). The study recommended that farmers in Kashare Sub-County implement comprehensive reforestation programs to restore vegetation cover. It also urged the government to enforce existing environmental policies, introduce new regulations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote sustainable land-use practices.
