Summary: | This study assessed the credit access and performance of women-owned businesses in the southern division of Kabale municipality. It was guided by specific objectives which were to establish the credit facilities offered by the financial institutions to women-owned businesses in the southern division of Kabale municipality, to establish the factors limiting the access to credit and business performance in the southern division of Kabale municipality, to determine the relationship between credit and the performance of the women-owned business in southern division Kabale municipality. The researcher used a descriptive cross-sectional survey where data was collected across the population at one point in time because it ought to describe the issues, the study was conducted in financial institutions about credit access and performance of women-owned businesses. The study sampling was done on 1 chairperson, 1 loans officer, 31 women with businesses, 3 accountants, and 4 cashiers from Southern Division which were both male and female. The questionnaire, interview guide, and observation methods were used to collect data and findings indicated that more females participated in the study than males. Respondents who were above 20 years participated more than the rest of the respondents. The study concluded that more respondents were single than the rest. Also concerning the educational background, it was concluded that many respondents were secondary school students and fewer respondents had attained diplomas and degrees as their qualifications like women, chairpersons, loan officers, accountants, and cashiers. The study concluded that credit facilities offered by financial institutions to women-owned businesses in the southern division are credit facilities and access to finance. Secondly, factors limiting the access to the credit and business performance of women-owned businesses in the southern division of Kabale municipality were inadequate collateral security, failure by financial institutions to offer credit to women-owned businesses, discrimination of gender, high interest rate, and lack of financial literacy. Finally, the study also shows the relationship between credit access and performance of women-owned businesses in the southern division to be skills of preparing and presenting credit requests to potential sources, diversion and misuse of funds lent to them finally the study recommended that financial institutions to ease access to credit on women, especially through reducing the interest rates, encouraging women to save in financial institutions such as savings and credit cooperatives societies, increase investment to increase the value of collateral security for easy access of credit |
