Description
Summary:The research examined the impact of economic deprivation on the welfare of older persons in Kabale District, specifically focusing on Butanda sub-county. It aimed to achieve three main objectives: assessing the prevalence of economic deprivation among older persons, examining its impact on their physical and mental health, and exploring interventions to address economic deprivation and improve welfare. Using a cross-sectional research design, the study included a sample of 46 respondents. Data was collected through questionnaires and interviews, and both quantitative and qualitative analyses were conducted. The findings revealed a high prevalence of economic deprivation among older persons in Butanda sub-county, characterized by insufficient food supplies, limited or delayed access to healthcare, and poor housing conditions. The study also found that economic deprivation negatively affects the physical and mental health of older persons, leading to financial stress, psychological and emotional disorders, and depression. To mitigate these impacts, the study suggested expanding social security schemes to non-civil servants, tailoring grants for older persons, and continuously providing skills training in productive ventures. Therefore, addressing the prevalence of economic deprivation and its impacts on the welfare of older persons requires collaborative efforts to improve their wellbeing.
