Summary: | The study focused on performance appraisal and employee productivity within organizations, specifically examining Kabale District Local Government as a case study. It was guided by three objectives: to establish the role of performance appraisal in the organization, to investigate factors influencing employee productivity, and to identify challenges in appraising employee performance. The targeted population included 59 respondents such as the Chief Administrative Officer, human resource management officers, accounting officers, finance officers, procurement department personnel, and clients. The study utilized both simple random and purposive sampling techniques to determine the sample size. Data collection methods included questionnaires, observation, and interviews. Collected data was processed, coded, and analyzed using Excel, a Microsoft statistical package, with results presented in tabular format. According to the study findings, 100% of respondents agreed on the significant role of performance appraisal at Kabale District Local Government. They highlighted its functions in maintaining fair relationships, facilitating counseling, planning, and retention, providing a foundation for organizational decision-making, determining promotions based on performance, and identifying areas for employee improvement. Factors influencing employee productivity at Kabale District Local Government included individual creativity, training and development opportunities, effective communication, clear goal setting, expectations, motivation through effective leadership, and technological support. Regarding challenges in appraising employee performance, respondents cited distribution errors, similarity errors, proximity bias, appraisal conflicts, attribution errors, and stereotyping. In conclusion, the study emphasized the critical role of performance appraisal in fostering fairness, counseling, planning, and retention within organizations like Kabale District Local Government. |
