Description
Summary:This study investigated the role of indigenous knowledge in sustainable agriculture within Kahungye sub-county, Kabale district, Uganda. The objectives were to explore farmers' perceptions of integrating indigenous knowledge with modern agricultural practices, evaluate the effectiveness of indigenous knowledge in addressing local agricultural challenges, and analyze socio-economic factors influencing its adoption. Using a descriptive research design, both quantitative and qualitative data were collected through structured questionnaires administered to farmers and semi-structured interviews with key informants, including community leaders and the sub-county agricultural officer. The study population included 120 respondents, comprising farmers engaged in agricultural activities and community leaders in Kahungye sub-county, with a sample size of 92 respondents determined using the Morgan and Krejcie table (1970). The findings revealed positive perceptions towards integrating indigenous knowledge, its effectiveness in tackling agricultural challenges, and the influence of socio-economic factors such as limited resource access and cultural beliefs on its adoption. In conclusion, farmers showed a favorable attitude towards combining indigenous knowledge with modern agricultural practices. Recommendations included targeted education campaigns, research support, and policy interventions to promote integration, enhance sustainability, and improve rural livelihoods.
