description | The study aimed to determine the impact of domestic violence on pupils' academic performance in selected primary schools in Rubanda District. It was guided by three objectives: identifying the forms of domestic violence in Rubanda, establishing the various causes of domestic violence in Rubanda District, and assessing the effects of domestic violence on academic performance in the district. A target population of 60 respondents was considered for the study, using both simple random and purposive sampling techniques to identify the sample size. Data collection methods included questionnaires, observation, and interviews. The collected data were edited, coded, entered into a computer, and analyzed using Excel, a Microsoft statistical package, with the results presented in tables.
The study found that 100% of respondents agreed on several causes of domestic violence, which included unfaithfulness, poverty (12 respondents, 20%), early marriages (5 respondents, 8%), diseases such as HIV/AIDS (9 respondents, 15%), gender inequality (10 respondents, 16%), and alcoholism (10 respondents, 16%). The findings revealed the impact of domestic violence on the academic performance of pupils, with death accounting for 8 respondents (13.3%), parental divorce for 10 respondents (16%), resource wastage for 5 respondents (8.3%), and family neglect and breakdown for 8 respondents (13.3%). Suggested solutions included law enforcement (22 respondents, 36.7%), providing a safe environment (11 respondents, 18.3%), and counseling (5 respondents, 8.3%).
The study recommended further research on the effect of domestic violence and household income on academic performance. |
