description | The study was about how a reform into the thematic curriculum could affect its implementation in upper primary classes in Kamwezi Sub County Rukiga District. It considered the following research objectives; to determine the effects of thematic curriculum on pupils' academe performance in upper primacy, to determine ways of improving thematic curriculum in teaching and learning in upper primary schools of Kamwezi Sub County, Rukiga District, and to find out other school related factors that affect pupil's academic performance in Kamwezi Sub County. The study adopted a descriptive-analytical cross-section survey as a research design, and a sample size of 84 respondents that included headteachers, teachers, and pupils who were both purposively and randomly selected respectively. Questionnaires and interview guides were used to obtain data from the respondents that were later analyzed and presented in the form of tables. The findings were discussed as follows; thematic curriculum improves pupils' self-direction and higher attendance. I can also take advantage of teachable moments/spontaneous events to engage them in their learning and promote learners. It provides pupils with a more meaningful learning experience to learners. It also builds on prior knowledge of pupils and motivates them when learning because engaging themes that relate to pupils' lives help them to get excited about learning. Finally, the thematic curriculum enables pupils to complete their homework and get better attitudes towards and helps to cover curriculum requirements of the subjects. It was concluded that a thematic curriculum offers opportunities for contextualized learning and makes a sense that is more relevant and practical for learning. Finally, the following recommendations were made; there is a need for the government to recruit more thematic teachers to handle large thematic classes. thematic teachers should use child-centered methods of teaching like demonstration, group discussion, and guided discovery where all pupils have a practical approach to learning and can arouse pupils' interest bead teachers should ensure that there is a regular supervisory system in their schools to improve teaching methods and social background of pupils. |
