description | The study assessed the influence of upland rice on household income in Nyamirama Sub County Kanungu District. It concentrated on identifying the factors favoring upland rice production on household incomes in Nyamirama Sub-county Kanungu District, to identify the contributions of upland rice production on household incomes in Nyamirama Sub-county Kanungu District and identify the challenges affecting upland rice production in Nyamirama Sub-county Kanungu District. The study was carried out in Nyamirama sub-county, about 35km from Kanungu District Headquarters. Kanungu District is found in South Western Uganda and it is boarded by Rubanda District in the west, Kasese in the East, Democratic Republic of Congo in the South, and Rukungiri in the North.
The researcher employed a descriptive cross-sectional survey research design that helped in gathering information where little knowledge is known. A cross-sectional study design across the respondents in Nyamirama Sub-County Kanungu District was used to survey the study population. The study considered a total of a hundred (100) respondents that is local community members, farmers, farm extension workers, and rice traders of Nyamirama sub-county Kanungu District. The primary data was gathered from the respondents that were selected for the study
farmers, local community members, farm extension workers, and rice traders). The researcher used questionnaires and interview guides to gather data from respondents. The data units were sorted according to the study objectives to produce coherent meaning. The data was then organized, entered into the computer, and analyzed using Microsoft Excel a computer-based statistical application program, where both inferential and descriptive analysis was used. The study results were later presented in the form of tables, for easy interpretation. Conclusion and recommendations were further drawn in the same arrangement with the study objectives that accrued from the study findings.
The researcher concluded that the researcher considered the age of respondents with the view of acquiring data from respondents to their lifetime experiences and understanding an indication that respondents between 20-29 years of age were still energetic and responsible for getting Involved in upland rice farming. It was also concluded that the factors favoring quality production of upland rice on household incomes indicated that there is a need to use quality inputs like fertilizers and seeds, and household sensitization on upland rice best farming practices. The study recommended that there is a need to increase credit financial facilities to farmers by providing agricultural loans at very low-interest rates with the help of village saving banks. The Government should always ensure very good quality agricultural inputs are allowed in the market to boost the entire agricultural sector not only upland rice farming. There is a need for efforts by the government and the entire citizenry to make accessible roads especially feeder roads to far-reaching areas to ease transportation of both agricultural inputs and upland rice produce. |
