description This study investigated the impact of parents' literacy on learners' competence in the English language in selected primary schools in Buyanja Sub County, Rukungiri District. A sample of 57 respondents comprising 3 head teachers, 27 teachers, and 27 pupils was used. The study had three objectives: to investigate the impact of parents' literacy on learners' performance in the English language, to examine the challenges faced by pupils in learning the English language, and to investigate ways of improving learners' competence in the English language. The data was collected using questionnaires and interviews and analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results of the study showed that parental literacy had a significant impact on learners' competence in English language. Learners whose parents had higher levels of education performed better in the English language than those whose parents had lower levels of education. The study also found that pupils faced several challenges in learning the English language, such as a lack of instructional materials and English language practice opportunities. However, parental involvement and support were found to be crucial in addressing these challenges and improving learners' competence in the English language. Based on the study findings, the study recommends that parents should be encouraged to get involved in their children's English language learning by reading with them in English language and helping them with their English language homework. The school administration should also provide more instructional materials and English language practice opportunities to enhance learners' competence in the English language. Further research should be conducted to investigate the impact of other factors such as teacher training and classroom environment on learners' competence in the English language.
