Summary:The study focused on examining the influence of field study on the academic performance of geography students. A case study of Rock High School in Southern Division, Kabale municipality. The study was guided by three objectives and they included; establishing the use of field work in the teaching and learning of geography, examining the influence of field study on the academic performance of geography students, to identifying the limitations associated with field study in the field of geography. A total sample of eight (80) respondents was considered for the study. The researcher used both simple random and purposive sampling techniques in identifying the study sample population. The methods that were used in data collection included questionnaires and interviews. Dara collected was edited, coded, entered into the computer, and analyzed with Excel, a Microsoft statistical package, the results were presented in tables. Based on the results from the study, respondents agreed field work is used in the teaching and learning of geography Field is an interactive strategy of teaching, field work helps learners to develop their career skills, the learning experiences and interactions between the learner and external conditions, provided them with exact and recognized knowledge of the distribution. From objective two above, it was found out that were are several limitations associated with field study in the field of geography and these included the needs of teacher trainees are not considered, time allotted to geography in most schools is not enough, students cannot relate things they learned with the real, geography teaching programs prepared by the Ministry of Education (ME) is not consisten. From the research, objective three it was found the ways of improving field studies in promoting academic performance and included choosing a location for a field experience is important, successful fieldwork requires preparation by students and instructors alike. , instructors also need to prepare their equipment
