The study objectives were to examine conflict in the play "The Lion and Jewel" by Wole Soyinka, to analyze how the playwright has used style to analyze how the playwright has used orature to bring out the conflict. The study employed a qualitative research design to conduct the study because it provided detailed information about the study and because this involved systematic collection, analysis, and interpretation of data based on text from the play to describe selected issues. The findings of the study revealed that there is conflict in the play between Baroka, the village Bale, and Lakunle, the school teacher. Both of them want to win Sid's hand in marriage, but this conflict is finally resolved as the play ends when Baroka "Yins Sidi for marriage. Findings further found out that conflict is further seen when Lakunle thinks he doesn't need to pay the bride price to marry Sidi, yet society and the entire setting of Illujnle believe in paying the price to marry people's daughters. The study concluded that Wole Soyinka's play The Lion and the Jewel is a significant success, which shows how African culture is better than Western culture. Baroka, who is the symbol of African culture, wins Sidi's hand in marriage over Lakunle, who symbolizes Western tradition. This shows the triumph of African culture over Western tradition. |
