description | The study assessed the effects of teaching methods on pupils' academic performance in mathematics in primary schools of the Bufundi sub-county, Rubanda district. The study was guided by three objectives namely: To examine the different methods of teaching mathematics effectively in primary schools of Bufundi sub-county, assess the levels of performance in mathematics in primary schools of Bufundi sub-county and establish the relationship between teaching methods and academic performance in mathematics in primary schools of Bufundi sub-county. The study used a cross-sectional descriptive survey design with both quantitative and qualitative approaches to data collection and analysis. The study adopted a case study research design whereby the researcher used only 4 (four) primary schools to collect data from members of a population to determine the status of that population for one or more variables. A sample size of 100 was used. Questionnaires and interviews were used during data collection. Data was analyzed using the statistical package for social scientists (SPSS) version 20.0 later presented in tables. The study findings indicated that 54% of the respondents identify lecture methods as one way of teaching mathematics effectively. They revealed that In a strictly lecture teaching approach, a teacher talks most of the time, uses audio-visual materials to illustrate mathematical concepts, work out mathematical problems and chalkboard, and finally summarizes the main points of a lesson on the chalkboard while pupils listen, take notes and have limited chances of asking questions. This study also revealed, 60% of the respondents revealed that an open-ended question that gets them writing/talking is one way of assessing pupil's academic performance in primary schools. To help students grasp ideas in class, ask open-ended questions that require students to write/talking. They can reveal more than you would've thought to ask directly. This was in line with the practices of Triarisanti & Pumawarman, (2019) who revealed that learning results are often referred to as skills or abilities. The study findings on whether any challenges hindered the implementation of staff training programs geared at improving teachers' job performance included limited funds, teachers' attitude towards training, resistance to change by teachers, and lack of time by teachers due to work schedules and the affect teachers' participation in training and their performance. The study recommended that teaching and learning resources should be provided adequately. Teachers should use the resources properly. |
