Description
Summary:Street sweeping has become an important service used to remove debris deposited on roadways to keep them dean to ensure the health and safety of human beings. The objective of this research was to design a mechanized road sweeper in order to ease and improve the street sweeping process. In order to achieve the objective of this study the following specific objectives had to be achieved: determining the design specification of the mechanized road sweeper, sizing and selecting components and then generating a layout of the machine. A survey of the existing sweeping technologies and methods was carried out through desk research from different sources and interviews in order to obtain data to help in specifying the design requirements, sizing and selecting components as well as generating a layout of machine. The different sources that were used include: text books, journals, standard catalogues, reports, articles, websites etc. The study found out that road sweeping is mostly done manually though a few machines have been employed in developed countries. The limitations of the existing sweeping methods were found to be: high fuel consumption, expensive and large space requirement by the mechanical sweeping systems, then labour-intensive, dusty, time consuming and tiresome for the case of manual sweeping. Basing on the data collected through literature review, it was concluded that a mechanized road sweeper should be designed. The major components of the proposed machine were drive wheels, gears, sweeping roller and disc brushes, dust filter, waste container, handle and frame. The layout of design was developed using solid works 2016 CAD software as per the dimensions of the individual components. The researcher, however, recommended that the fabrication of the machine needs to be done based on the individual part parameters developed in this thesis and performance testing of the machine to embrace the new technology for effective sweeping process.
