This article discusses an important, though still insufficiently discussed, stage in the history of Polish stylistic thought. It spans the period from the revival of scientific life after World War II to the publication of Stylistyka polska (1959), a monograph co-authored by Halina Kurkowska and Stanisław Skorupka, which remains the first published synthesis of linguistic stylistics in Poland. The article aims, firstly, to describe the dynamics of stylistic debates between 1945 and 1959, and secondly, to outline the intellectual circles engaged in these polemics. The lively discussions about the status of the discipline at that time led to a kind of institutionalization
of research on style. Several scholarly teams emerged, notably in Warsaw, Kraków, Toruń, Łódź, and Lublin. The author also highlights the main directions of stylistic inquiry into 16th-century literature, including the growing interest in the functional
varieties of the Polish language.
