| description | Founded at the same time as the city of Kairouan (al-Qayrawān) by Muslim conquerors in 50 AH/670 AD, the Great Mosque (al-Jama ‘al-Kabir) is a high place of worship characterized by monumental architecture and religious prestige and history. Today, the Great Mosque of Kairouan continues to occupy a special place both within the urban area and in the imagination of the Muslim faithful. It is a place for prayer, visits, meetings and gatherings for readings of the Koran (imlâat).Our study will reconstruct the contemporary social history of the Great Mosque’s religious space in relation to the career of its imam, Sheikh Abderrahman Khlif (1917-2006), in order to understand the logic behind the reproduction of urban moral order through the charisma of the “Tunisian Savonarola” who opposed Bourguiba and his modernizing project. |
