| description | Approaching islands and islanders through our thesis subjects, we question the implications of our subjectivities as researchers, a priori conditioned by our origins – continental for one, islander for the other - in our fieldwork approaches. This mirroring reflection raises a wider question about the relationship between the geographer and his/her field. In this particular case, we take a reflexive look at the emotional ties forged in the study areas, before and during research. In the course of our researches, this reflexive approach ultimately led us to mobilise our respective subjectivities as part of our field survey methods. By revealing our own subjectivities, we were able to gather a genuine discourse from islanders, who felt more at ease revealing their own subjectivity, whether it concerned, in the case of Pauline F.'s work, their vision of territorial issues, or, in the case of Pauline J.'s work, their migratory trajectories. Furthermore, this approach aims to deconstruct the power relationship between the researcher and his/her interlocutors. By describing the construction of a research approach qualified as intersubjective, we stand for the rehabilitation of affect in the academic discourse, not as a bias but as a driving force in research. The outcome of this reflexive dialogue leads us to consider islands not as fields but as research territories. |
