Description
Summary:This paper aims at discussing the role of the associations of the social and medico-social sector (home care, care homes, etc.) within the French social protection system. With the expansion of market-based policies, social and medico-social associations are increasingly invisible. Their role in the social protection system is restricted to mere service providers. Using the framework of Théret (1997), the paper shows that the institutional mediations related to the social and medico-social sector do not assign a specific role to associations. However, the literature on associations highlights other institutional mediations, which are based on the exercise of the tribunician function of associations. These mediations have the potential to structure the future for the sector and the social protection system. They differentiate associations from other actors, and they contain mechanisms of meso-level regulation.
