Description
Summary:Limón is a province of Costa Rica that since the construction of the nation-state has been assigned simultaneously an instrumental peripheral condition and a central role within Costa Rican capitalist development. In this article we are interested in interpreting the spatial policies designed and materialized in the past and present in order to understand the ways in which unequal geographic development produces peripheral and functional spaces. To this end, the regional and urban scales of these processes were analyzed, based on the fact that a space cannot be understood in isolation but must be analyzed in its interrelationships. At the methodological level, documentary research was carried out through an in-depth bibliographic review of specialized studies on the history of Limón; as well as a systematization of regulations (laws and decrees), reports, press releases, documents on infrastructure projects and territorial management, written press, and web pages of public institutions and companies. It is concluded that the spatial policies implemented in Limón have produced spatial inequalities and injustices that must be known and questioned in order to build fairer futures and geographies.
