| description | The article takes into consideration the recurrence of a topos, a return to identical situations and their implications in the understanding of the present – which borrows from both the anacyclosis of Polybius and the historia magistra vitae. It brings out the links between Guicciardini’s texts, sometimes separated by several years. This analysis of the pattern of the occhio buono, based on a letter sent to Machiavelli, the Dialogue on the Government of Florence, a discourse of 1525 and several ricordi, helps us to understand how a first nucleus of sense, born in the contingency of a letter, becomes a leitmotiv and a cornerstone of Guicciardini’s thought. It considers the writing of Francesco Guicciardini as a constant practice, going back and forth between different periods of his life and numerous kinds of writing, including his voluminous correspondence. |
