Factors affecting reproductive performance and genetic analysis of American Duroc, Yorkshire, and Landrace sow

This study investigated the influence of sow farrowing season, litter size, and breed on sow reproductive performance, using a comprehensive dataset comprising 20,048 records spanning from 2016 to 2021, involving 1,589 Duroc, 3,070 Landrace, and 15,389 Yorkshire sows. Data on various parameters such...

description This study investigated the influence of sow farrowing season, litter size, and breed on sow reproductive performance, using a comprehensive dataset comprising 20,048 records spanning from 2016 to 2021, involving 1,589 Duroc, 3,070 Landrace, and 15,389 Yorkshire sows. Data on various parameters such as sow management number, breed, litter size, breeding and farrowing dates, number of piglets, live births, stillbirths, total litter size, deformities, and weak piglets were meticulously documented. The study revealed that genetic factors predominantly determined the litter factors of Duroc sows, while the farrowing season had a more significant impact on the litter size of Landrace and Yorkshire sows. These findings emphasize the necessity of considering both genetic predisposition and seasonal variations in breeding programs. Given the distinct effects observed among the breeds, a customized approach to breeding strategies is essential for enhancing sow reproductive performance.
