Description
Summary:This article analyzes some of the contributions made by photojournalism to building democracy in Argentina between 1983 and 2002. It will describe different historical moments in which photographers participated, reported crimes, were the main reason why some events were visualized, and obtained evidence that were used by the courts. The perspective proposed in this text is admittedly subjective. It deals with the resounding cases where photographers managed to avoid the limits that the media and/or governments imposed on them; where they established a collective sense of activism that exceeded their professional work; where they became independent; or where they strengthened the media they were working for to alter or deepen their agenda. The facts described here are not the general rules of photojournalism in Argentina, only exceptions. The goal is to understand when these exceptions occurred and under which circumstances, as well as to identify the social actors that drove them, the changes they generated and the achievements they led to.
