Description
Summary:Louis Veuillot, in his play Le Lendemain de la victoire, Vision, indulges himself in describing an imaginary civil war thorning France apart and opposing the forces of evil – socialism – to the catholic heroes. While this virulent and merciless opposition to the growing tide of socialism during the Second Republic was common among the conservative writers, this choice of describing an imaginary conflict is quite original. With this play, Veuillot aims to deride the French liberals, unable in his eyes to prevent the socialist revolution to come, and to defend the catholic church as the only bulwark of traditional society. Moreover, through this civil war presented as a punishment to come, Veuillot intends to expose the idea of a military coup, designed to prevent this apocalyptical conflict.
