| description | The dynamics of reindustrialization and decarbonization are a response to climate and geopolitical issues that have become increasingly urgent since the 2020s. In this study, we focus on the Aix-Marseilles metropolitan area, where the deeply deindustrialized city center borders a periphery that hosts most of the industrial centers, in particular an industrial port zone with a concentration of heavy industries that emit high levels of CO2. The Aix-Marseilles metropolitan area is thus the scene of a polymorphous energy transition, involving a diversity of players, practices and territorial configurations. Two transition models are at work: a weak transition, advocating the use of technological innovations and market regulations, and a strong transition, involving much more disruptive societal changes that converges with the concept of alter-metropolisation. This paper questions the links between these models in the same area, by hypothesizing a pragmatic hybridization that highlights the interweaving of economic, political and social-environmental issues. |
