description Marie de Batarnay was the mother of Anne de Joyeuse, Henri III’s favorite. Marie’s son rose to power at court during the Wars of Religion. While her husband remained in his native Languedoc fighting Protestant troops, she went to Paris to promote and protect the interests of the Joyeuse and the Batarnay families. Our main sources concern the negotiation of prenuptial agreements and dealing with inheritances, which are key moments in life. Such documents open a window on the way Marie helped build the Joyeuse family’s fortune, and thus the lineage’s identity, becoming a major player in their upward mobility. In this paper, we will study the history of the Joyeuse family’s fortune and their social mobility in the light of Marie de Batarnay’s action.
