description This article aims to analyse the relationship between memory and communication of the environmental risks associated with old french uranium mines. The uranium mining is related to the history of new technology’s development, from its control to its integration into society until its management after the blackout. Uranium production began in the aftermath of World warII ended in 2001 in France with the closing down of the last mine. The research angle focuses on the conditions of post-operational vigilance and the risk management methods in the long run. Indeed, the history of uranium mining is not linear but it articulates several stories : the saga of exploitation, site rehabilitation and monitoring, and finally of vigilance in the consideration of risk. This is specifically the matter to analyse how memory represents a strategic factor in public risk management. If the reconstruction of events is likely to be involved as traces in the memory mobilization, this observation questions the place of the “memorable” in the risk management.
