description This article explores the problem of specific modes of signification in the visual arts as tackled by Hubert Damisch. Drawing on a dual critique of iconology and semiology, the French philosopher and art historian develops a pragmatic and materialist approach to the works of art, based on the concepts of surplus and figurability. The article, using the example of The Origin of Perspective, goes on to sketch out the conditions of possibility of a theory of description and iconicity that interweaves text and image, without reducing one to the other. Furthermore, such a theory adresses not so much the images themselves as the interpretive relationship that develops between them and the subject who looks at them and is being addressed by them.
