Description
Summary:Objective: To study the prevalence of hearing loss in children with congenital Cytomegalovirus infection and the influence of the type of maternal infection, symptoms and neonatal treatment with valganciclovir. Study design: Retrospective cohort Material and Methods: Data was collected through computerized processes of children with congenital Citomegalovirus, followed in Hospital de Guimarães, between 2017 and 2022. Hearing evaluation was performed between 2 months and 2 years old. The type of maternal infection and treatment with valganciclovir were assessed. Results: Twenty-two children were enrolled in this study. Global prevalence of hearing loss was 50%, greater in symptomatic children and children born to mothers with primary infection. After treatment with valganciclovir, 41.6% of children presented with hearing loss. Conclusion: The risk of hearing loss is greater in symptomatic children and children born to mothers with primary infection. A screening programme should be implemented regarding the high prevalence of hearing loss in asymptomatic children.
