Summary: | Old age is a concept that defines the later periods of life span and the changes that individuals undergo in this period. As the individual, who changes and transforms with his/her environment, grows older, some social problems arise in his/her life. The older adults, who have experienced great disadvantages in the process of transition from an agricultural society to an industrial society, have faced psychological problems as well as problems such as health, housing, care and employment. The support of family and social environment is important in coping with these problems. Thus, the aim of this study is to examine the perspectives of individuals who have older adults in their families about the concepts of old age, older adults individuals, institutional care and ageing in place. The study was conducted in qualitative research design. The study group of the research consisted of individuals who were over the age of 18 and had older adults in their families. In this context, 11 participants- six males and five females- were interviewed. A semi-structured interview form was designed to collect data, and the interviews with the participants were conducted via this form. After analyzing the collected data, four themes emerged: attitudes towards old age, the meaning of having older adults in the family, knowledge about institutional care and views on caregiving. As a result of this study, the participants' feelings, thoughts and attitudes towards old age, their knowledge levels about ageing in place and institutional care are discussed. It is thought that the study is important in terms of improving the perceptions about older adults-related institutions and organization services in our country. |
