| description | If we are to define commonly the “chola” from La Paz as an indian female in upward social mobility, the woman de pollera, this simplistic definition is not sufficient, since the meanings vary with the context: they are intelligible in social interactions, and therefore they are dynamic. The case of the comerciantes minoristas, mainly de pollera, is an example: on the one hand, when the señoras de vestido use “chola”, it is an abuse which tends to erase the frontier with the indian female, and on the other hand, some saleswomen appropriate this stigma and shape a status-enhancing image of the woman de pollera, in search of superiority in comparison with the indian females. Around these meaning controversies, it is some different conceptions of society that are in confrontation. |
