| Summary: | In the General Election of December 2019, the Labour Party suffered a surprising and spectacular defeat, the fourth in a row within a decade, one of the worst in its history since WWII. The aim of this article is to put this result in a long-term perspective, identify the current features of the Labour electorate, and finally analyse the roots of Labour’s loss of attractiveness. Attention will be given to the role played by Labour's leadership, programme and strategy, as well as to the specific issue of Brexit, in order to take full measure of the electoral failure, which reveals a deep identity crisis. |
