Prevalence and correlates of depression among maintenance hemodialysis patients in Huhhot region, China: a cross-sectional study

ObjectiveTo explore the prevalence of depression in maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients in Huhhot, China and identify its independent related factors.MethodsFor this cross-sectional study, from July 2020 to October 2020, 315 MHD patients on hemodialysis therapy for >3 months were randomly...

description ObjectiveTo explore the prevalence of depression in maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients in Huhhot, China and identify its independent related factors.MethodsFor this cross-sectional study, from July 2020 to October 2020, 315 MHD patients on hemodialysis therapy for >3 months were randomly recruited from Affiliated Hospital of Inner Mongolia Medical University, First Hospital of Huhhot, People's Hospital of Inner Mongolia and Inner Mongolia International Mongolian Hospital. The status of depression was assessed by self-rating depression scale (SDS). General demographics and the other relevant data were collected for univariate and multivariate Logistic regression analysis.ResultsThe prevalence of depression was 55.6% in MHD patients in Hohhot of Inner Mongolia, including 28.3% for mild, 21.0% for moderate and 6.3% for severe. Average monthly family income, number of comorbidities and itching status were the independent related factors for depression according to multivariate regression analysis.ConclusionThe prevalence of mild/moderate depression is relatively high in MHD patients in Hohhot of Inner Mongolia. A rise of average monthly family income is an independent protective factor for depression while higher comorbidity number and greater itching degree are independent risk factors for depression.
