description Landscape architects are helping to develop resilience in overheated cities. They are putting their methods and expertise at the service of the public to improve climate comfort in summer. These methods and expertise involve developing biodiversity, using the water cycle and preserving fertile soil. Together, these elements can provide a formidable low-tech air-conditioning system since energy-intensive architectural and technological solutions can no longer provide the only answers to health crises caused by repeated heatwaves. This paper looks at the contribution of landscape architects to the quality of living environments in urban renewal projects. The body of case studies used to develop the argument comprises projects developed by the author’s agency in the cities of Lyon and Grenoble. Some of these studies have been carried out as part of project-based research which previously focused on the issues of water and vegetation and which has since broadened to cover work on fertile soils and climate.
