Effect of Intermittent Pneumatic Compression Therapy and Short-Stretch Bandaging Use on Symptoms of Chronic Venous Insufficiency

Introduction: The treatment of venous leg ulcers (VLUs) is a difficult medical problem both for patients and health providers. Objectives: The aim of study was to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of intermittent pneumatic compression device and shortstretch bandaging in the treatment of VLUs.Object...

description Introduction: The treatment of venous leg ulcers (VLUs) is a difficult medical problem both for patients and health providers. Objectives: The aim of study was to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of intermittent pneumatic compression device and shortstretch bandaging in the treatment of VLUs.Objectives: The aim of study was to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of intermittent pneumatic compression device and shortstretch bandaging in the treatment of VLUs.Material and methods: In this study, 26 patients with venous leg ulcers were included: 18 males (69%) and eight females(31%), at the mean age of 65.09.7 (min: 47, max: 80) years. Patients in group I had superficial venous insufficiency, but ingroup II – superficial and deep venous insufficiency. All patients underwent intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC) therapyfor 15 days and next, double-layer, short-stretch bandaging for 15 days. The progress in wound healing was evaluated viathe Photographic Wound Assessment Tool (PWAT) and Wound Bed Score (WBS).Results: In both groups of patients, statistically significant changes in the WBS and PWAT value point scales were observed: ingroup I, by an average of 4.75.0 points, and in group II, by an average of 6.14.5 points on the WBS scale, and in group I,by an average of 4.34.2 points, and in group II, by an average of 3.73.3 points on the PWAT scale. Conclusions: In the present trial, it has been shown that IPC (60 mm Hg) applied 60 minutes a day, 7 times a week; and bandages(40 mm Hg) applied 10-12 hours a day, are effective in treating both superficial and deep VLUs.
